The distinction between a "Multi-Section Homes" and a "Modular Home" is a bit
subtle. Lots of folks use the terms interchangeably. And with good reason. The names
are derived from the method of construction, referring to the fact that these homes
are built in transportable home sections, or "modules," which are put together and
finished on a permanent foundation. We make a distinction based on *building
code*.
When we use the term "Multi-Section Home" we refer to any single-family
house constructed in two or more sections entirely in a controlled factory environment in
accordance with the federal Manufactured Home Construction and Safety Standards
(better known as the HUD Code).
The HUD Code
The HUD Code regulates the home's design and construction, strength and
durability, transportability, fire resistance, energy efficiency and quality control. It
also sets stringent performance standards for the heating, plumbing, air conditioning,
thermal and electrical systems.
